Technology

The self-supporting tanks are assembled from several cylinders.

In most cases, the first section of the tank is more robust and thicker, as this is where the entire load is absorbed by the king pin and the frame is only inserted at the rear. There are several shapes of self-supporting tanks: cylindrical, bottle-shaped and banana-shaped.

In general, self-supporting tanks are more complex to manufacture than tanks that are placed on a full frame. The construction and the individual steps are more time-consuming.

In terms of weight, there is hardly any difference compared to saddle tanks with full frames, as the container construction of a self-supporting tank must be more stable, with more material and therefore also heavier. Visually, however, these vehicles look lighter.

The advantage is the possibility of using frames – known as subframes – made of stainless steel. As stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, it offers significantly greater durability.

But beware, even here, material fatigue due to use will occur over time. Depending on the area of application, which always has an impact on the mechanically stressed parts such as axles, axle bearings, etc., there is corresponding wear and tear, which also affects the service life of the vehicle.

We developed the SPSTT model in collaboration with Spanish manufacturer Parcisa S.L.U. The containers are delivered to us by Parcisa, and we assemble and install all other components and customer-specified equipment at our facility in Leverkusen.

We also rely on modular construction for this type of saddle tank. This ensures additional speed, i.e. rapid availability of vehicles and spare parts, and optimises inventory levels. The components and most of the assemblies can be used on all of our vehicle types.

History

This type of saddle tank is produced entirely by a vehicle manufacturer. However, as production is very time-consuming, quantities and production capacities are quickly exhausted.

This means that delivery times are significantly longer compared to saddle tanks with full frames. However, by using the modular system, we are able to achieve greater speed here too.

Since the end of 2022, we have been sharing the individual production steps with Parcisa, thereby increasing production capacity for both companies and ensuring rapid availability for customers.
